The State of SWTOR

One of the most common questions asked on the SWTOR subreddit is: "What's the state of the game?" It's an understandable question to ask, and one that comes up in other MMO communities as well, but SWTOR in particular seems to have a lot of people wrongfully thinking that the game shut down ages ago, which is simply not true. There's just something about the "SWTOR is dying/dead" videos that attracts clicks...

As someone who's been playing the game since launch while also posting about it consistently over that entire period of time, I thought it might be fun to create a permanent page with useful information on the subject that I could update every so often and that curious players could use as a reference.

Is SWTOR dead?

No.

Is SWTOR dying?

Also no, at least no more than we are all slowly dying one day at a time.

Was SWTOR put into maintenance mode when it was moved from Bioware to Broadsword?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Players were justifiably worried when the news about the studio move broke in June of 2023, as Bioware is still considered a prestigious studio name, while Broadsword was a bit of an unknown entity with a questionable reputation for being a not particularly well-run retirement home for old MMORPGs. However, most of the then current SWTOR dev team basically just ended up changing employers, and from what we know there were actually more of them than of the existing Broadsword staff, so they kind of just got to continue doing their thing as they were. The game's update cadence has continued uninterrupted since then, while Bioware actually seem to be the ones who are struggling. At this rate, I would not be surprised if Bioware gets shut down one day before Star Wars: The Old Republic does.

Is SWTOR still adding story content?

Yes, though the 2024-2025 SAG-AFRTRA video game voice actors' strike resulted in a bit of a content draught that lasted more than a year. Now that the voice actors have resumed work, the next story update is expected to drop at the end of 2025.

Is SWTOR's story content no longer fully voiced?

SWTOR's story content was only fully voiced for the game's first two years or so. Starting with 2014's Shadow of Revan expansion, they started to cut down on voice acting and interactive cut scenes for side quests, though the main storyline remained fully voiced.

2023's update "Old Wounds" surprised many players for first including a segment as part of the main storyline in which the player character doesn't speak. It was admittedly a less important bit, but still made for a somewhat jarring experience. This trend has since continued, with the majority and most cinematic parts of the main storyline still being fully voiced and animated, but certain more quiet parts only featuring written text prompts for your conversation choices. This has remained contentious.

What was the last SWTOR expansion?

The last expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic was Legacy of the Sith (also referred to as patch 7.0) and came out in February 2022.

When will SWTOR get its next expansion?

We currently don't know when or even if SWTOR will get another expansion, as its expansion cycle has always been irregular, and the last expansion launch was not well received. It's quite possible that the devs will stick to just continuing to develop the game with an on-going patch cycle.

How often does SWTOR get content updates?

The devs have settled into a pretty regular update cadence of delivering four noteworthy patches a year. Two of them are what I'd call major patches, which tend to include a main story update as well as some other new things to do, such as dailies or dynamic encounters. The other two are what I'd call the minor patches and include the launch of a Galactic Season as well as some quality of life updates. Galactic Seasons are a sort of battle pass system that encourages players to re-run old content for new cosmetic rewards.

When was the last major content patch and what was in it?

The last major patch, 7.7, launched in May 2025 and added dynamic encounters to seven planets that didn't have them before. (Full patch notes here.)

When was the last minor content patch and what was in it?

The last minor patch, 7.7.1, launched in August 2025 and primarily marked the start of Galactic Season 9. (Full patch notes here.)

When can we expect SWTOR to get its next notable patch?

The next major patch, 7.8, is expect to launch towards the end of the year, usually a couple of weeks before the Christmas holiday period.
